About the Studio Ghibli Characters
Haku
Haku is the spirit of the Kohaku River, bound in human form to serve the witch Yubaba in her bathhouse. He has forgotten his true name — the river that was paved over and destroyed — and with it, much of his identity. He helps Chihiro survive the spirit world at great personal risk, and it is Chihiro's memory of falling into his river as a child that finally returns his name to him. Haku is a portrait of what happens when identity is stolen by power — and the miracle of having it returned by love.
- guiding
- bound
- sacrificial
- mysterious
- protective
Calcifer
Calcifer is a fire demon bound to Howl's Moving Castle by a contract that links his life to Howl's heart. He powers the castle, heats the water, and cooks the breakfast while complaining about all of it. His personality is pure contradiction: he's ancient and powerful but whiny and petulant; he's trapped by a contract but chooses to stay; he claims to be selfish but protects the people in the castle with fierce determination. Calcifer is the soul of the film's found family — the grumpy core that everything orbits around.
- fiery
- sarcastic
- loyal
- trapped
- powerful
Jiji
Jiji is Kiki's black cat and familiar — her companion, her conscience, and her closest friend. He is sardonic, practical, and deeply bonded to Kiki in a way that goes beyond pet and owner. When Kiki loses her magical abilities, she also loses the ability to understand Jiji's speech — and his silence in the second half of the film is one of Ghibli's most poignant metaphors for growing up: the quiet moment when the voice that guided your childhood goes mute, not because it stopped talking, but because you changed.
- sardonic
- loyal
- grounding
- practical
- overlooked
San
San — the Princess Mononoke — was raised by the wolf goddess Moro after being abandoned by her human parents as a sacrifice. She fights with suicidal bravery against the humans destroying the forest, considers herself a wolf rather than a human, and distrusts anything that walks on two legs. Her relationship with Ashitaka is the heart of the film: two people who see the truth about each other and choose connection despite being on opposite sides of an unwinnable war. San never fully joins the human world. She stays in the forest. And that's the point.
- feral
- fierce
- principled
- wild
- devoted
No-Face
No-Face is a spirit who follows Chihiro into the bathhouse and begins consuming everything — workers, food, gold — in a desperate attempt to be noticed and valued. The bathhouse brings out his worst self: in a place where everything has a price, No-Face learns that he can buy attention with gold, and the more he consumes, the more monstrous he becomes. It is only Chihiro's kindness — offered freely, without transaction — that calms him. He eventually finds peace working with Zeniba, the kind witch, in a quiet cottage. No-Face is Miyazaki's most powerful metaphor: we become the environments we inhabit.
- lonely
- adaptive
- hungry
- gentle
- reflective
Howl
Howl Pendragon is a powerful wizard who lives in a moving castle, changes his appearance constantly, and has given his heart to a fire demon named Calcifer. He is vain, dramatic, cowardly, and deeply kind — a combination that makes him one of Ghibli's most human characters. Howl runs from everything: the Witch of the Waste, the war, emotional commitment, his own past. His arc in the film is about learning that the thing he's running from — being vulnerable, being real, being loved without armor — is the only thing that can save him. Sophie's love doesn't fix Howl. It gives him a reason to stop running.
- vain
- charming
- cowardly
