About the Inside Out Characters
Joy
Joy is the first emotion to appear in Riley's mind and she takes her role seriously: keep Riley happy, no matter what. She's golden-skinned, bright-eyed, and literally glows. In the original film, Joy struggles to understand why Sadness matters, but by the end she learns that every emotion — even the painful ones — has a purpose. In Inside Out 2, Joy faces the reality that Riley is growing up, and happiness alone can't protect her from the complexity of adolescence. Joy's greatest strength is also her blind spot: her relentless positivity sometimes means she avoids difficult truths. But when it counts, Joy's willingness to let go and trust the other emotions is what makes Riley whole.
- optimistic
- energetic
- supportive
- resilient
- enthusiastic
Sadness
Sadness is small, blue, and wears round glasses that make her look perpetually on the verge of tears — because she usually is. For most of the first film, Sadness seems like the emotion everyone wants to avoid, including Joy. But her breakthrough moment — sitting with Bing Bong in his grief — proves that sometimes the most healing thing you can do is simply be present. Sadness doesn't fix things; she acknowledges them. In Inside Out 2, Sadness has found her place at the console, understood and valued by the other emotions. She represents the quiet truth that growth requires loss, and that crying isn't weakness — it's processing.
- empathetic
- thoughtful
- gentle
- perceptive
- honest
Anger
Anger is a squat, red brick of fury in a shirt and tie, and he reads the newspaper at the console like a dad who just got his parking spot stolen. He's the emotion who reacts fastest and loudest, and he's responsible for some of Riley's most volatile moments — like the disastrous idea to run away. But Anger isn't just rage: he's Riley's sense of justice, her refusal to accept things that aren't fair, and her willingness to fight for what matters. In Inside Out 2, Anger wrestles with the new emotions and their unfamiliar approaches, especially Anxiety's tendency to plan instead of act. He's proof that passion, channelled correctly, is a force for good.
- passionate
- direct
- protective
- principled
- bold
Disgust
Disgust is green, glamorous, and perpetually unimpressed. She's the emotion responsible for keeping Riley from being poisoned — literally and socially. Disgust protects Riley from bad food, bad fashion, and bad decisions, and she does it with a withering glare that could curdle milk. But beneath the eye rolls, Disgust cares deeply about Riley's wellbeing and social standing. She's the one who knows what's cool, what's cringe, and what will get you laughed at in the cafeteria. In Inside Out 2, Disgust navigates the minefield of teenage social dynamics where the stakes feel impossibly high. Her sharp judgment is really just love wearing armour.
- discerning
- confident
- protective
- stylish
- sharp
Fear
Fear is a tall, thin, purple nerve in a bow tie who treats every new situation like a potential disaster — because to him, it is. He's the emotion who keeps Riley alive by calculating risk, flagging threats, and occasionally screaming. Fear is responsible for Riley's list of potential dangers (it's very long) and he takes his job seriously. He may faint at the sight of a spider, but he's also the reason Riley looks both ways before crossing the street. In Inside Out 2, Fear faces competition from Anxiety, who does his job but ten times more aggressively. The difference between them is key: Fear protects Riley from real dangers, while Anxiety spirals about imagined ones.
- cautious
- observant
- analytical
- loyal
- vigilant
Anxiety
Anxiety is the breakout star of Inside Out 2 — a jittery, orange whirlwind who arrives in Riley's mind during puberty and immediately starts remodelling. She means well, genuinely: Anxiety believes that if she can anticipate every possible bad outcome, she can protect Riley from all of them. The problem is that her protection looks a lot like control. She hijacks the console, suppresses Joy and the original emotions, and constructs an elaborate belief system designed to make Riley someone who fits in at all costs. But Anxiety isn't a villain — she's an emotion learning her boundaries. Her arc is about understanding that you can't plan your way out of being human, and that sometimes the bravest thing is to let go of control and trust that you'll be okay.
- thorough
- driven
- caring
- strategic
- intense
