About the Lord of the Rings Characters

Sauron
Sauron was once Mairon, a Maia of Aulë the Smith, drawn to order and perfection. He served Morgoth, the original Dark Lord, and after Morgoth's defeat became the dominant evil in Middle-earth. He forged the One Ring to control the other Rings of Power, waged war across two ages, and was ultimately destroyed not by a hero's sword but by a hobbit's failure to resist temptation at the exact right moment. Sauron's story is about the catastrophic fragility of total control — the more completely you dominate a system, the more completely you fall when one small piece is removed.

Saruman
Saruman the White was head of the Istari — the wizards sent by the Valar to guide Middle-earth against Sauron. He studied Sauron's methods so thoroughly that he began to replicate them, breeding his own army of Uruk-hai, building his own industrial base at Isengard, and attempting to claim the One Ring for himself. His fall is specifically intellectual: he convinced himself that joining the winning side was wisdom, not cowardice. After his defeat at Helm's Deep and the Ents' destruction of Isengard, he retreated to the Shire and became a petty tyrant — proving that his ambition, stripped of real power, was just cruelty.

Gollum
Sméagol was a hobbit-like creature who found the One Ring in the river Anduin and murdered his cousin Déagol to keep it. The Ring extended his life for five hundred years while destroying his mind, body, and identity. He lived alone under the Misty Mountains, talking to himself in two voices — Sméagol and Gollum — until Bilbo found the Ring and took it. Gollum's pursuit of the Ring across the entire trilogy ultimately determined the fate of Middle-earth: his final act of seizing the Ring at Mount Doom sent both him and it into the fire, accomplishing what Frodo could not.

The Witch-king of Angmar
The Witch-king was the leader of the Nazgûl — the nine mortal kings who accepted Rings of Power from Sauron and were reduced to wraiths bound to his will. He was once a king of Men, possibly of Númenor, but his name and identity were consumed by the Ring centuries ago. He led armies, founded the kingdom of Angmar to destroy the North, and commanded Sauron's forces at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. He was killed by Éowyn and Merry — a woman and a hobbit — fulfilling Glorfindel's prophecy that 'not by the hand of man will he fall.'
- obedient
- imposing
- hollow
- fearless
- unstoppable
Gríma Wormtongue
Gríma Wormtongue was counselor to King Théoden of Rohan, secretly working for Saruman in exchange for protection and the promise of Éowyn. He poisoned Théoden's mind with despair, weakened Rohan's defenses from within, and fled to Isengard when Gandalf broke his hold. Tolkien treats Gríma with a specific kind of pity — he is not powerful enough to be a true villain, not brave enough to be redeemed, and ultimately kills Saruman in a final act that might be justice or might just be a cornered animal biting. He dies immediately after, shot by hobbit arrows.
- manipulative
- cowardly
- pitiable
- bitter
- dependent
Shelob
Shelob is the last daughter of Ungoliant, the primordial spider-spirit who tried to devour the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. She has lived in the tunnels of Cirith Ungol since before Sauron built Barad-dûr, and he leaves her alone because she guards the pass and eats anyone who tries to enter Mordor from that direction. She is not Sauron's servant — she is a force of nature, older than his ambition, concerned only with feeding. Frodo and Sam encounter her because Gollum deliberately leads them into her lair, and Sam drives her off with the light of Eärendil and Sting.
